It is a part and feature of the created order to long for and yearn, for the divide between him and the supreme beauty and good is great. It is a divine that cannot be traversed but must be. How great the distance between man and God, so great is the longing for God’s being, his essence. This longing is not a desire like others, it is part of who we are, for to long for the divine is most human and of creatures. And thus all creations groans deeply for the renewal of all things, to the union of heaven and earth, the uncreated with the created. This longing is the seed of eternal life for it is what calls us to this union and sways us to it as water flows through riverbeds and earthen curvatures to the ocean, while being the evidence of its coming as well.
