Don’t always listen to the immediate voice of God. Read the Bible, do objective good, never do objective wrong. In deep prayer, take heed to what you hear. For when we are guided by the immediate voice of God, he guides in a different way, according to a different set of rules, as he concedes to our ways, yet not giving us truly what we long for. However, guided by Scripture, captive to commands, we may receive all things, as God’s will becomes changeable.
One saint once said, never do evil that good may come.
For, when we are allowed to do so, it may be that we have abandoned the commandments.
