In the beginning, man was tied to God and to creation in perfect relation. Subsequent to the sin that split man from God, there came a distinct experience of isolation for mankind - from God, even from each other in shame.
Thereafter, man cannot find meaning except in his union with that which he lost, his wife, woman, being a type of foretaste of true union with God.
And just as the end of a marriage, divorce, nullifies the meaning of all that preceded, so the end of union with God, the severing of that union, is the nullification of all that occurred during that union.
Union, covenant is meaningful, in fact it is the only meaning we may find. And in severing that union or jeopardizing it, we are left bereft of all meaning that occurred before and would have been known afterwards. Our task is to remain in union with God and with our love, and in maintaining this union we find great meaning and happiness, the true life and the eternal life.
