Happiness according to Aquinas is the enjoyment of the supreme good, and just as we may love God through the created order, its beauty, its intelligent design, the moon, the stars, the waters and rivers, the sun and the light that shines so brightly upon the earth and our skin, we may enjoy the good in this world as a man climbing towards the supreme good, with each rung being a way to attain the end, seeing God as this end, being the cause, the giver, and the source as the supreme good. Therefore, rejoicing in the Lord is not merely a commandment that brings us to contemplate eternal truths but even the flowers in your garden, their miraculous beauty, the music that so elevates our hearts, and even the air we breathe, for all this is given by the Lord who is supreme good, and in enjoying this, not only in itself but as a way towards the being of God, we may find him in the flower, then the sun, even as we climb higher as we find him in the Bible, and finally in him himself.
