Why was Abraham’s posterity so mistreated, so abused, so eaten, so oppressed, so subjected? Five hundred years, and God heard the voice of his people, complaining and crying to the Lord.
What sins were being expatiated? What wrongs being paid?
For God, not in his divine providence, had forgotten his people for so long, but in forgetfulness.
Did not Abraham receive the righteousness of God?
What wrongs and sins merited so great a neglect?
Despite the period of expiation through suffering, God was recalled as the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, not simply the God of Heaven and earth.
And Moses being the fire of God’s presence, remained 40years in exile before becoming the great prophet of the Israelites and of the Law of God.
Do not avert your eyes from the lengths of time in Exodus’ recounting of the past, but fear God and do good, so that in Christ his eyes may never be averted from us.
