To practice religious and spiritual discernment is utilitarian at worst. It is a benefit to the individual because he may practice the wise evaluation of other people's actions, words, choices, and even mental states.

Rather than believing another's statement simply because you are inclined to, to practice discernment is a way of being free from being manipulated, deceived, and naive.

So, whether or not you possess the gift, pursue it - not out of skepticism, but in exploration of the different sensitivities your mind and spirit possess. Do not be enslaved to our manipulable mind with statements without evidence to support them. Practice discernment and obtain truth spiritually as well as logically when the evidence presents itself.

If God exists, if the spirit is real, if we are in fact spiritual beings - to seclude ourselves to logic is the truncation of epistemological range.
