Every spirituality needs a form of evaluating whether one is in a state of grace, whether one is on the true path to eternal life, with Christ dwelling within, if it is to be worthy of the time and struggle to implement. There are many gauges for knowing, though without complete certainty.

One of them is meditation on death, judgement, hell, and heaven and seeing the reaction of the heart. Is the conscience merely informed or is there a deep pain or darkness within that requires your tears and is bringing them forth? 

Another one is noticing whether there is love for Christ as he is in himself in the heart. 

Another is the constant sense of joy in the heart that is not due to thinking rather to the blessing and infusion of the Spirit of God.
