The knowledge that we have eternal life is not an esoteric nor an assumed essential element of soteriology in seeking salvation. It is a gift of God and acquired through the understanding given by the Beloved Apostle in his first letter. To know that you have eternal life is a result of believing in Jesus Christ and loving your brothers and sisters. It is possible to have both without the third gift.
